The Senate rejected President Obama's nomination of Adegbile to head the Justice Department's civil rights division in 2014. Much of the opposition stemmed from his having headed the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund when it represented Mumia Abu-Jamal, who had been convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer.
