The perjury trial of I. Lewis Libby focused a rare spotlight on the usually secret connections between journalists and the White House.

Prosecution witnesses included former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, former Time reporter Matthew Cooper, columnist Robert Novak, Washington Post editor Bob Woodward and Tim Russert, host of Meet the Press.

Journalists have testified about their sources and the interviews conducted "on background," in which government officials speak on conditions of anonymity.

"Almost every single conversation I have in Washington is on background," Glenn Issler, Washington Post staff writer, testified.

After deliberating for 10 days, jurors convicted Libby of lying to F.B.I. agents and grand jurors.
