Despite rising criticism for his role in arranging promotions and salary hikes for his girlfriend, Paul D. Wolfowitz said Sunday that he will continue as World Bank president.
Bank officials said they were "concerned," and bank staffers have called on Wolfowitz to resign.
Shaha Riza, described by the bank as Wolfowitz's "domestic partner," was working at the bank when Wolfowitz arrived. Wolfowitz declared the conflict, and was told by ethics committee members that she should leave, but remain on the bank payroll. Wolfowitz then dictated a package that provided a raise of more than $60,000.
Riza was reassigned to the State Department, and later left for a position at the Foundation for the Future, an organization that receives funding from the U.S. government.
